EarthHour is an event organised by WWF. It originates from Sydney in 2007 and has become a global movement this year.(it has a facebook!)
I think its an interesting event. Just by turning off your lights for a mere 1 hour, the significance of it is immense. The collective efforts of thousands of people (20,517 people has signed up as i type this) not only saves electricity(roughly 10.2% of the total energy Sydney consumes during that hour in 2007), it also mark a great feat of “doing little to harness a great outcome with collective efforts”. This set a good example of how a realistic movement against global warming should aim for. No one wants to sacrifice too much for the environment such that it impedes their daily motions. Such small acts enable one to contribute not only to the environment, it also help to spread such a movement as others take notice of you getting your lights off at a timing(8pm) which people don’t usually do.
However, please do not only restrict yourselves to doing it only once a year on 29 March, 8pm! Such little act can be practiced on ANY day, at ANY locations(where you are able to switch off the lights), and with ANY equipments(not only lights can be switched off to save energy!).
NBNL proudly supports EarthHour.
