Today(when i started writing), 22th March, is World Water Day.(i didn’t even know it until i chance upon it on Youtube.) I did some research and let’s see what the world and Singapore has done in water conservation. More after the jump.
World Water Day 2008
This Year’s Theme for the WWD is International Year of Sanitation. From here, you will see what’s the UN Action Plan this year regarding WWD. (the site by itself is really very informative, do take sometime to read about Sanitation.)
This being a global day for the celebration of water, will naturally have much events around the globe.(heck, we are talking about the United Nation here) The Unicef Tap Project, is a project on every 22th March that encourage participating restaurants in United States to charge diners $1 for the usage of tap water that day. The $1 is of course used for good purposes. $1 is not a really big amount to the diners, as compared to their bill. But $1 is enough to provide clean safe water for 40 childrens for 1 day. The video below is truly inspirational, maybe we Singaporeans can embrace such a project too, doing little but creating a great impact on other’s life.(Just like the Earth Hour)
The Unicef’s Tap Project, 2009 and we will see it globally!
As this year is the International Year of Sanitation, the World Toilet Day is also on the calender of events. Just a brief fact on World Toilet Day, it is supported by the World Toilet Organisation, and this organisation is led by a Singaporean and is based in Singapore. We are actually quite prominent on the atlas eh?
Facts on Water
Next, we will look at Singapore’s water conservation. I remember the numerous posters on water conservation. “Turn It Off”, sounds familiar? From young, i have been educated on how to save water. It still remain vivid in my memory, like when PUB issues the free simple plastic device(thimbles) for the water taps which can reduce water consumption by 40%(if i didnt remember wrongly), i was the most enthusiastic about installing them. Another one will be the poster of a child bathing in a small tub with a little water, with the notion of something like “do you want your child to be like this in the future?” I couldn’t find the pictures of the posters online, any clues?
Another video on Water’s Importance
Recently, i read about this water bottle design that 2 Singaporeans did. Their design focused on the need to recycle the plastics. Just little relevant to the topic of “water”, but such green efforts should be noted.
Some water conservation ads i found….

after 30+ pages of google images.
