Beijing Olympics 2008: The Moments Part 1

As promised, this is part of the Beijing Olympics 2008, which stretched for 16 days. Numerous best and worst moments, and i’ll list out my personal favorites.

The Most Jubilant Winner

Germany’s Matthias Steiner won the gold medal in the men’s +105kg weightlifting class at the Beijing Olympic Games.
Steiner hoisted 203kg in snatch and 258kg in clean and jerk for a winning total of 461kg.
And look at how he celebrates.

And before you think he’s a retard to be jumping around, the story behind him is truly inspirational. It goes like this, his wife died in a car accident a year ago. His wife was still saving up, just to watch him at this year’s Olympics. He promised a gold for his wife, Suzanne, but it didn’t really materialise, because she died before it could happen.
However, through this heart wrenching episode in his life, he came out stronger, with the sole aim, a gold for his deceased wife.
“When Suzanne died in a car accident, two years after their got married, Matthias was devastated. His entire world was in shambles, but the promise he gave his wife in the last moments of her life – that he will win the gold medal – kept him sane. Although without fireworks, he managed to qualify to the Olympics where weightlifters from Russia and Turkey were the favorites. It took Matthias the record total weight of 1014 pounds to keep his promise, a weight he had not thought he was capable of lifting.
“She is always with me, in the hours before the competition, she`s there,” he said, clutching his wife`s picture in his hand. “I managed to lift it because I had this strong, innermost urge,” he told journalists through the tears. The over 231-pound German sportsman was not the only one crying at the moment. Emotions swept through his coach, reporters, spectators in the gymnasium, and hundreds of millions of viewers from around the world.”

The Worst Stumbles

And, as many knows, it belongs to team USA. They stumbled in a number of sports, particularly, athletics and baseball. The main focus will be on their athletics. With a stroke of real bad luck, we see many “accidents” happen which they can only redeem after 4 years later..
Tyson Gay didn’t qualify for 100m final
The three fastest man touted to run in the 100m final end up with only 2 of them. Tyson Gay failed in his heats and thus, only Asa Powell and Usain Bolt got in. And guess who won.

100m Hurdles Women Final, Lolo Jones was leading, but stumbled… at the last hurdle.

“It’s kind of like when you’re racing a car at max velocity and you hit a curve,” an emotional Jones said. “You can either maintain control or you can crash and burn. Today, I crashed and burned.“

Beijing Olympics 2008 batons are cursed.
Tyson Gay must be really out of luck, because he missed the baton this time, and stumbled AGAIN.

Their USA Women counterparts ain’t that lucky either. While they allowed Jamaica to make a clean sweep of the 100m gold, silver and bronze, they didn’t put up a fight(although they were really close to the jamaicans before they dropped the baton) again in the 4×100m.

However, a friend of mine said something which became true. When team USA changes the color of their running wear, they will win. And it’s true, in 4×400m they changed to a red colored wear(previously blue), and they excelled.
