Ah, another issue that’s stepping onto religious grounds.
Well, personally i don’t really see the hoo-ha about the whole issue. It’s not because i am not into that religion. It will be explained below.
LOS ANGELES (Reuters Life!) – A nude model resembling the Virgin Mary on the cover of the Mexican edition of Playboy magazine, published only days before a major Mexican festival dedicated to the mother of Jesus, prompted the company’s U.S. headquarters on Friday to apologize.
The magazine, which hit newsstands on December 1 as ceremonies began leading to Friday’s pilgrimage to the Mexico City shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe, showed a model wearing nothing but a white cloth over her head and breasts.
She is standing in front of a stained glass window with the cover line, “We Love You, Maria” in Spanish. The model’s name is Maria Florencia Onori.
The Virgin of Guadalupe, said to have appeared to a sixteenth century Indian peasant, is Mexico’s most revered Roman Catholic figure and the annual pilgrimage to the Mexico City basilica dedicated to her is one of the world’s largest religious events.
In a statement, Chicago-based Playboy Enterprises Inc said the Mexican edition of the magazine is published by a licensee, and the company did not approve or endorse the cover.
“While Playboy Mexico never meant for the cover or images to offend anyone, we recognize that it has created offense, and we as well as Playboy Mexico offer our sincerest apologies,” the statement said.
Raul Sayrols, publisher of Playboy Mexico, said in a statement, “The image is not and never was intended to portray the Virgin of Guadalupe or any other religious figure. The intent was to reflect a Renaissance-like mood on the cover.”
Playboy Mexico printed 100,000 copies of the issue.

Through the search and reading up on this lady(not the one modeled above) i meant Virgin Mary.. I though a youtube comment i saw was rather apt.

Don’t you think that’s it’s freaking true? Well, no one has seen Virgin Mary, so how can it be said and confirmed that she(the Playboy model) was modeled after her?
Well, to me, at least the editorial didn’t really seems provocative and erotic in nature.[pictures here]
Maybe the timing to publish this was just plain wrong.

I don’t agree with your line of reasoning, though, ie:
No one alive has seen Mary before –> No one knows what she looks like –> It cannot be confirmed that the erotic shots were modelled after her.
One, your argument won’t hold in a court of law. It is clear that Playboy modelled their photoshoot after an image of Mary that has been popular and accepted for a long time. Even if it is highly probable that it’s not her real image, it’s enough to land a defamation suit. (But i’m assuming Mary isn’t going to go to court with this.) Stained glass, crown, they all add to the insinuation, and that’s all it takes to assume and convict.
Two, Mary has apparently appeared in various times throughout history, and i think some girl that saw her apparition countless times throughout her life is, well, still alive. So it’s not true no one alive has seen Mary before. Then again, my knowledge of these visions is a bit hazy. And how believable are apparitions anyway? Lastly, that you think maybe the timing to publish this was just plain wrong. Hmmm. There is never a good time to publish this.

Hmm, i can say i don’t really believe those apparitions and encounters with her, but of course i cannot totally eliminate the possibility of it being a fact. There’s this recent news that a boy who was very much touted as the reincarnation of Buddha. I mean, this kind of occurrences is always happening and no one can actually come out and safely say, “Yes, this is him/her, and i have got strong evidences”.
And thanks for the comment, it actually helps me understand more of this, as my knowledge around this religion is rather shallow.

As an American Muslim, I share in his sentiment of outrage. I can say, this is totally offensive to a billion Muslims in the world!
What are we teaching our children and society, when we find ourselves so openly degrading Mary – the purest of women.
Christian, Jew, Muslim or atheist – it is sufficient that Mary is respected in over half of the world’s population that we should make an extra effort here to spare demeaning her. Dare I say that no one deserves to be demeaned in such a manner?!
Perhaps to put things into perspective – would it warrant our outrage if someone was to pose nude and refer to our own mother’s name on the picture?
